TODD
LEITZ - LEAD VOCALS & HARMONICA
|
   |
Todd Leitz was born the son of an artist and
a lumber-man's daughter in the hardwood forests of Vermont. Early days were spent bushwhacking
the woods of the Connecticut River Valley ... hearing the music of
the forest. Or combing the coast near Cape Cod ... and feeling
the rhythm of the ocean. His daddy and grandaddy blew
on harmonicas around the campfires at night. They would
play the old songs, the sad laments of lonely men and waiting women. Just
singing and drinking ... a loin of venison on the spit, or clams
and lobster stewing in seaweed under the sand. Summers in the
saw-mill, the whine of the jigsaw cutting gun-stocks for M1 rifles,
the work songs of the rip-saw crews in the forest, the graders stacking
the hardwood Vermont is famous for and the hiss of the kiln fire.
His parents listened to the folk-music popular at the time -- echoes
of Guthrie, Dylan, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel. But growing up not far from Boston,
he got into early Aerosmith and The J Geils Band ... Led Zeppelin and The
Rolling Stones ... The Who and Jimi Hendrix. They became his salvation
during the dark days of Disco. The family moved to the San Francisco Bay
Area for Todd's high school years. He discovered he had a voice, a
drama teacher noticed and urged him to try out for the school play Soon
Todd was singing the lead in musicals like Guys and Dolls and Grease in high
school and college. He graduated college with a Bachelor's Degree in Political
Science ... but also minored in music and theater. He sang in a gospel
choir that toured California. He met the girl he would marry, settled
down, moved to Los Angeles to start a career and a family ... and put his
love for music on the back-burner. So far back that when his ballplayer
buddies wanted to get together to play music in the mid-90's, they were surprised
when Todd said he could sing and play the blues harp. The boys joined forces
to become the nucleus of what is now CORE ... and nearly ten-years later, Todd
is so grateful that creating and performing music is back in his life.
A life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox, Todd's work with CORE gave him the moxie
to pursue a childhood dream. In June 2004, he sang the National
Anthem at Fenway Park before a Red Sox game, the same season the team won the World
Series for the first time in 86 years. Coincidence or curse-breaker? You
decide.
And you can hear Todd Leitz (pronounced LIGHTS) reporting live for KNX
1070 NewsRadio every weekday morning throughout southern California,
and on the CBS Radio
Network.

GARY
JOHNS - LEAD GUITAR & VOCALS
|
   |
|
"A long, long time ago, two friends, rhythm and melody, came to me and said... come out and play... I thought for a while and said... WHAT? Again... come out and play... I then understood... come out and play with others and JAM!! At that time, I played the drums... I love the drums. But the search continued for my voice, and I switched to the bass (which is right next to the drums)... Still searching, the guitar was starting to sing, and the choice was made... did I mention, I love the drums?"
Gary brings his life into every moment he plays...always a new approach, reflecting the day. He spends quite a bit of time mountain biking (day and night rides) and has found the physical demands of the JAM to be very similar to climbing the hill... warm up, rhythm and breath into the climb... and fly down hill.

STEVE
ROBBINS - GUITAR & VOCALS
|
   |
Steve originally caught the music bug when free guitar lessons were offered at his college dorm cafeteria. Several years and two jobs later it was time to head west to California and study full time @ Musicians Institute in Hollywood. After graduating from school the dream of being a full time musician faded to the reality of a much needed paycheck. Core was formed to play music with friends without the burden of making it a career. Steve would like to thank Susan for her endless support in keeping the dream alive.

TOM
ATKINS - BASS & VOCALS
|
   |
Everything you ever wanted to know about Tom Atkins.
Born in Brooklyn in the early 60s, Tom left New York in 1991, spending five years in Seattle before landing in Los Angeles - where he plans "to stay forever!" He picked up the guitar as a teenager and played rhythm guitar in several bands in the San Fernando Valley in the late 90s, most notably in 'Stunt Road'. When a bass vacancy appeared in an all-instrumental local band called 'KUSH', Tom gave up the guitar and decided to give the bass a try. He ended up really enjoying playing bass - and spent several years in 'KUSH' until it imploded.
Tom hooked up with 'CORE' in March, 2004 - and has never looked back! His favorite musical artists include Todd Rundgren, Billy Joel, The Grateful Dead, and Phish. His biggest bass influences are the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh and Phish's Mike Gordon.
Tom lives in Los Angeles with his lovely girlfriend and her daughter. By day, he is a debt recovery specialist and computer network guru. When the work day is over, he indulges in motorcycling, hiking, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Disneyland - and heavy doses of San Francisco's KFOG ( www.kfog.com) and LA's Indie 103.1, ( www.indie1031.com).

PAUL
COLBERT - DRUMS & LEAD VOCALS
|
   |
Paul's earliest
aspirations of becoming a musician came while growing up in Riverside,
CA, smog capital of the world. "I remember air-drumming to the
great motown songs I'd hear in the back seat of my mother's stationwagon. I'd
often sing along with the Four Tops and Temptations while trying to
memorize the drum parts. The biggest bolt of inspiration came
when I heard a kid not much older than me belt out 'I Want You Back'
over and over. I was hooked.
"My sister and I pleaded with our parents to take us to see the Jackson 5 at
the Forum in 1972. I can't remember hearing a note of the concert over
the screaming girls, but it was an unforgettable first concert experience. After
that show, there was no way anyone could stop me from singing. I became
addicted to the radio and listened to every kind of music I could; Rock, Pop,
Soul, whatever I could get close to. I was always strumming my tennis racket,
or drumming on the table with my fork and spoon. When mom played Stevie
Wonder's "Talking Book" album, I was mesmerized. Who knew a blind man could
play drums and sing at the same time?!?
"I was eternally jealous when the neighbor's kid got a drum kit. "He's
younger than I am! It's not fair." That was the only thing I asked
for as a Christmas gift for 3 years, but my father -- who had his fill of
my dinner table solos -- would have no part of it. Luckily, the neighbors
took a lot of vacations, and frequently asked me to water their plants. I
glady accepted and spent entire days on playing their son's drums."
Paul has never stopped singing. He's held countless steering wheel and
shower head concerts. But the drumming thing became a reality in the late
'90s. "I discovered electronic drums. I picked up a kit and
found they were perfect for apartment living. I could play as long as I
wanted with the headphones. I taught myself by playing along with hundreds
of my favorite songs."
After helping form Longball (which eventually became Core) Paul started playing
the electronic kit at several clubs in the L.A. area. The gig with Core
led to a stint with a second group called the Recession (with bassist Simon Watkins,
keyboardist Charles Saltzman and guitarist Jason Meyers) out of Culver City. The
Recession played mostly rock and R&B covers, sprinkled with a few originals. Paul
sang lead on about half of the Recession's songs.
Now Paul spends most of his time playing and singing with Core. "Maybe
one day we'll add "I Want You Back" to our repertoire and everything will come
full circle!"

STEVE
DEMPSEY - KEYBOARDS & VOCALS
|
   |
Steve
Dempsey is a native of California, born in the
70s in the Los Angeles area. On his street where he grew up, at 5
years old, he met some great neighbors. Those neighbors were
into music and they taught a few melodies on the piano
to Steve. From there, his parents found him a piano
and signed him up with lessons.
He studied under Hal Weatherwax for 6 years, then at 15, took off
into his own creative world of composing and playing. Another influence
was Ken Bauer a.k.a. "Kenny B", his jazz band director
at high school. Kenny B gave him many opportunities to take solos
and improvise...and in a jazz festival competition, his band placed
in the top 3, and he walked away with 'Outstanding Instrumentalist'
and 'Outstanding Soloist' awards.
Continuing to pursue his love of
music, Steve majored in music at college, and received his Bachelors
of Arts degree in Music from California Lutheran University.
Prior to CLU, he attended Glendale Community College where he participated
in the Jazz Ensemble, and a local big band group called the "Verdugo
Swing Society". While at CLU,
he continued to play in the Jazz Ensemble, and was fortunate to play
with special guests: Ann Patterson-saxophonist and
head of 'Ann Patterson's Maiden Voyage', an all female jazz band ,
John Clayton Jr.- double bassist who is a
performer, composer, and arranger in both the jazz and classical fields, played
with Count Basie and his orchestra, and the arranger of the 'Star
Spangled Banner' version for Whitney Houston's Super Bowl performance,
and the one and only Poncho
Sanchez -
renowned conga player in latin jazz, and Grammy Award winner.
After
college, Steve played a few weddings for friends and family, but mostly
found himself playing at home with the headphones on jamming late into
the night. It was not until the Summer of 2004 when he met Steve Robbins
while playing for 'Elvis Club' softball team....the rest was history.
Steve thanks his loving wife for allowing him to make time to
jam...and they both share their happiness in Los Angeles with their
2 children. His current work is as a website designer for Barefoot
Media and this website is part of his creative madness.
A side project that Steve recently participated in was the pre-party
for CalProg 2005 with
his progressive rock band 'L.
A. Underscore'
on June 3, 2005. The performance was a success, and the band has been
asked to play on the main stage next year (dates to follow). The debut album "Escape From Omaha" which includes guest artists: David Ragsdale (formerly of Kansas), Jerry Goodman (Dixie Dregs), Ryo Okamoto and Alan Morse (Spock's Beard), and Joel Derouin (Most requested recording artist for violin, with a list of credits as Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, to the American Idol Orchestra). Steve will keep everyone posted when the album will be available.
August 2005, Steve had the opportunity to work with and record some tracks with world renowned progressive rock lead guitarist of Spock's Beard, Alan Morse...it was truly an honor and unforgettable experience.
NAMM 2006, Steve hung out with 3 band members of Spock's Beard around the Expo.....Alan Morse, Dave Meros, and Nick D'Virgilio...other musicians he was fortunate to meet were Frank Gambano, Alan Holdsworth, Oz Fox, and Derek Sherinian.
March 2006, highlighted by 'An Evening with Dream Theater' concert at the Pantages....front row center seats (high fivin' the band) and a meet and greet with the band backstage after the concert.....a chance to meet keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess, guitar specialist John Petrucci, bass guitar virtuoso John Myung, drumming god Mike Portnoy, and the man with the super pipes vocalist James LeBrie.
The list continues........who will be next?
